Worked example

A concrete image compressor example

Input
Three 4032 × 3024 JPEG photos, each smaller than 50 MB.
Settings
Target 200 KB per image, WebP output, maximum long edge 4096 px.
Result
Up to three WebP downloads, each at or below 200 KB when that target is achievable. If it is not, the tool reports that the requested target is too small instead of claiming a false result.
What to expect

How it works

Each image is decoded into a canvas and initially limited by the chosen maximum long edge. The tool tests WebP or JPEG quality values between 4% and 96%. If even the lowest tested quality is too large, it scales both dimensions down and tries again, returning the highest tested quality that stays within the byte target.

Limits and edge cases

  • A very small target may be impossible without reducing an image below a useful size; the process stops and asks for a larger target rather than exceeding it.
  • Compression is a new pixel encoding, so animation, EXIF data, embedded color profiles, and previously discarded image detail are not preserved.
