How it works

A scale factor is calculated from the two positive serving counts. Each row's quantity is parsed as a decimal, fraction, or mixed number, multiplied by that factor, and displayed with up to three decimal places; its unit and ingredient name remain unchanged.

Know before using

Limits and edge cases

  • The quantity parser does not understand Unicode fraction symbols, ranges such as 2–3, or descriptive amounts such as “to taste.” Unrecognized rows show a question mark.
  • Scaling changes quantities only; it does not convert units or adjust pan size, oven temperature, proofing time, or cooking time.
Common questions

Recipe scaler FAQ

Is recipe scaler free to use?

Yes. Recipe scaler is free to use.

Does recipe scaler keep my work private?

Yes. Your work stays private while you use the tool — nothing you enter is uploaded.

How is the scale factor calculated?

It is target servings divided by original servings. Going from 4 to 6 servings gives 6 ÷ 4 = 1.5, so each recognized quantity is multiplied by 1.5.

Can I enter mixed fractions?

Yes. Enter a whole number, a space, and a fraction, such as “1 1/2.” Plain fractions such as “3/4” also work.
