How to create a favicon for your website
Every website needs the little icon in the browser tab, and modern sites need several sizes. Start from one logo and get a ZIP with everything: the PNGs browsers and phones ask for, a classic ICO, and a manifest to start from.
Step by step
Open the favicon generator
Start the free generator — it accepts JPEG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF images up to 50 MB.
Add your logo or mark
A simple, bold source around 1024 × 1024 works best; rectangular sources are proportionally contained, not stretched.
Choose a background
Keep transparency, or place the artwork on a solid background color — the unused space in each square follows your choice.
Generate the icon pack
Sizes of 48 px and up get roughly 6% inset padding so the mark never touches the edge.
Download and deploy the ZIP
You get 6 PNG sizes (16, 32, 48, 180, 192, and 512 px), a 32 px favicon.ico, and a starter site.webmanifest referencing the 192 and 512 px icons.
Tips that save a second try
Automatic scaling cannot make intricate artwork readable at 16 px — simplify the source mark and inspect the smallest files before publishing.
The ICO contains a single 32 px image, which covers the classic browser-tab use case; the manifest still needs its name, paths, and theme settings reviewed for your real site.
The ZIP contains assets, not HTML — add the appropriate link elements and deploy the files at paths that match your site configuration.
Common questions
Must the favicon source already be square?
No. A rectangular source is proportionally contained inside each square output. The unused space stays transparent or uses the selected background color.
Does the ZIP include the HTML link tags for my site?
No. It contains icon assets and a starter manifest. Add the appropriate link elements and deploy the files at paths that match your site configuration.
